Welch WV: Small in Size, Big in History
Welch is the county seat of McDowell County WV. Incorporated as a city in 1893, it is located at the Tug and Elkhorn rivers.
Welch was named after Isaiah A. Welch, a former captain in the Confederate Army who came to the region as a surveyor and helped establish the plan for the beginning of a new town. Welch was made the county seat of McDowell County in an election by county citizens in 1892, even before Welch was incorporated as a city. The previous county seat was in Perryville (now the community of English) near present-day Coalwood. Results of the election were contested; to avoid violence county records were secretly moved from Perryville to Welch at night in two wagons.
One of the most significant events in early Welch history occurred on August 1, 1921, when detectives from the Baldwin-Felts Detective shot down Matewan Police Chief Sid Hatfield, a member of the Hatfield family of the famous Hatfield and McCoy Feud, as well as Ed Chambers on the stairs of the McDowell County Courthouse during southern WV coal wars.
In the early 1900s, as the railroad and coal mining industries were booming, Welch became the prosperous hub of a growing community with three hospitals, retail stores, banks, and churches for a county that boasted a population of nearly 100,000 residents.
In the years following WWII, oil increasingly replaced coal for heating needs, and mechanization replaced workers, greatly reducing the jobs available in the country. Even so, in 1960, McDowell County produced more coal than anywhere else in the nation. Welch proudly proclaimed itself as the “Heart of the Nation’s Coal Bin.”
As US Steel production declined, so did the need for coal. In recent years, McDowell County residents have suffered continued job losses. The closure of coal mines dramatically decreased income and real estate values in the county as miners were forced to abandon their homes to seek work elsewhere. One of the most difficult blows to the local economy occurred in 1986 when the US Steel mines near Gary led to the loss of more than 1,200 jobs.
New Job Opportunities in McDowell County
Employment opportunities have picked up with the building of new state and federal prisons which have infused new revenue into the community. Restoration of the Welch downtown area is moving forward, and locals are working hard to renovate their community.
Fracking in Southern West Virginia is also providing new employment opportunities. Home-grown energy and jobs are great, but a high cost has been paid by some landowners, gas drilling workers, and even those who have had to live with contaminated water supplies.

Car Accident Injuries
Jeff Robinette was hired by a young woman who had sustained permanent injuries to her foot due to an auto collision. The insurance company offered such a small amount and dealt with her in such a dismissive manner that the treatment of her case amounted to bad faith on the insurance company’s part. Jeff was able to obtain a substantial settlement which allowed this young woman and her husband to pay medical bills, buy a car and a home, and start building a future together.
Drunk Driver
While driving his car, our client was hit by a drunk driver which injured his shoulder so severely that three surgeries were required. The insurance company haggled over the value of the claim, initially giving a low-ball offer. Jeff Robinette was able to force the insurance company to pay all insurance available for this claim.
Motorcycle Accident
A police cruiser was attempting to make a U-turn on a four-lane highway and collided with our client’s motorcycle. The trooper had failed to follow the rules of the road by making an unsafe or prohibited lane change and was found to have operated his vehicle in an “erratic, careless, or reckless” manner.
As a result of the trooper’s negligent driving, our client sustained bodily injuries which required emergency room treatment and subsequent physical therapy and prescription medication to recover from his injuries.
The Robinette Legal Group, PLLC was able to recover an ample settlement to cover our client’s medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
