Mesothelioma is cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and protective tissues surrounding many of the body’s internal organs. Most commonly, the tumor forms initially on the outer lining of the lungs, known as the pleura and inner chest wall). As it becomes malignant, it can also spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity, the heart, and other vital organs.

Asbestosis is a severe respiratory medical condition that affects the inner lung tissue. It is caused as a direct result of inhaling asbestos fibers. Usually, it is the result of long-term exposure, as the fibers attach themselves to the lung walls. Asbestosis is listed as an occupational lung disease by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Most people diagnosed with asbestosis or Mesothelioma have worked in an industry where heavy contact with asbestos-based products or bi-products is part of their regular job activities. There have been documented cases in which the spouse and family members of asbestos workers have contracted Mesothelioma after inhaling the asbestos dust particles brought into the home on the worker’s shoes and clothing.

How Does Mesothelioma Develop?
Asbestos exposure is almost singularly responsible for causing Mesothelioma, which occurs when asbestos enters the body by inhaling or ingesting the fibers.
Once the fibers become lodged in organs and body cavities, they may cause infection and inflammation. In addition, these affected cells can become cancerous, which results in Mesothelioma.
There is no known cure for Mesothelioma, and the five-year survival rate is around ten percent. However, surgery, chemo, and radiation can help and are generally recommended by physicians.
Four Types of Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma in the Lungs
As a result of asbestos fibers in the membrane lining the lungs, the lung cells become inflamed, infected, and eventually cancerous. The cancerous cells multiply uncontrollably, which results in the thickening of the pleural membranes. This causes the patient to have difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, and chest pain.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma in the Abdomen
Cancerous cells thicken the peritoneum when asbestos fibers become lodged in the peritoneum (the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity). Fluid buildup and tumors can cause fatigue, night sweats, nausea, abdominal swelling, and pain.
Pericardial Mesothelioma Affecting the Heart
If asbestos fibers enter the body and lodge in the pericardium, the membrane that protects and surrounds the heart, fluid can build up. Infection, and inflammation set in and cellular changes occur. When the cells become cancerous, they cause the pericardial membranes to thicken, causing tumors.
Main Sources of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos Use by the Military: Veterans, especially those who served between 1940 and 1980, have the most excellent chance of exposure. The military used asbestos in more than 300 products because of its fireproof and insulating properties. In addition, Navy ships from this era used a significant amount of asbestos in their construction.
Schools and Homes Containing Asbestos: Schools, university buildings such as coliseums, and homes constructed in the mid-1900s often contained asbestos insulation and siding. Asbestos was considered the perfect solution for keeping people safe and warm… until the cost to human life became known.
Asbestos in Automobiles: Auto mechanics had the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of asbestos-containing parts, including hood liners and brake pads.
