St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, has unfortunately become a deadly day in the United States. This is due to a dramatic spike in drunk-driving fatalities, a day when 30-40% of vehicle accidents are caused by DUI.

In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend more than a third (40%) of all crash fatalities involve drunk drivers, the most, not surprisingly, between midnight and 5 a.m. “During some St. Patrick’s Day weekends, half of all crash fatalities involved drunk drivers,” said personal injury attorney Jeffery Robinette, founder of the Robinette Legal Group, PLLC.

Attorney Jeff Robinette Ilustrates Need for Driving Safety on St. Patrick’s Day

To help keep people safe this St. Patrick’s Day following the party, Robinette lists the following three tips:

No. 1: Ensure everyone has a safe ride home. “As guests RSVP, confirm that they have a plan for a safe way home via a non-drinking designated driver, such as Uber, Lyft, public transportation, taxi, etc.,” stressed Robinette. “Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving.”

No. 2: Have non-alcoholic options. Offer non-alcoholic beverages or fun, green mocktails for non-drinking designated drivers and others who prefer not to drink alcohol.

No. 3: Take away keys if necessary. “If, despite your efforts, some of your guests have had too much to drink, never let them drive home impaired,” concluded Robinette. “This is the best way to prevent DUI collisions, car accidents and fatalities.”
