ROWLESBURG, W.Va. – A Preston County man died after two days in the hospital following a two-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle over the weekend. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists risk of a fatal crash is 35 times greater than an occupant in an automobile.
According to a release from the Kingwood Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, troopers responded to the collision on Sunday, July 10 at around 4:30 p.m., on West Catherine Street in Rowlesburg. The accident involved a motorcycle and a Dodge Ram pickup truck pulling a trailer, according to troopers.
The motorcycle driver, 56-year-old Steven Shay of Aurora, West Virginia, was life-flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown; he died on Tuesday morning due to his injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The most common causes of motorcycle wrecks include dangerous left turns. Forty percent (40%) of motorcycle crashes involved the other vehicle turning left in front of the oncoming motorcycle while the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle. Other drivers just not paying attention, dangerous intersections, lack of visibility, and dangerous practices like lane splitting add significantly to the potential hazards of riding a motorcycle.
