A tragic beginning to a new school year: Two cars and five people were involved in a fatalhead-on collisionon Fairmont Road (highway US 19)in Monongalia Countynear the intersection with Sugar Grove Road at about 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Highway 19 is a narrow, curvy, undivided highway with very limited shoulder room.
At least two of those injured or killed in this wreck were local teens from the Morgantown area; one was a recent high school graduate and the other still registered at UHS. A third teen who was a passenger in the backseat was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment for injuries. The two occupants of the other car were also seriously injured and hospitalized following the Fairmont Road accident.
Due to the sheer physics involved in head-on collisions, the resulting impairments or disabilitiesarenearly alwayssevere and catastrophic requiring extending medical treatment, and all too often,same lanecollisions result in fatalinjuries.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office hasreportedthat two who were in the vehicle crash were killed instantly and the remaining three were hospitalized at Ruby Memorial Hospital for serious injuriesfollowing this two-vehicle fatal accident involving teens.
One of the vehicles was traveling north andwas reported to havecrossed into the south-boundlane,strikingthe vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Five people were involved in the accident; two were pronounced dead at the scene and the others were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.
